With Halloween just a few weeks away – no one does this time of year quite like New Englanders! Maybe it’s the infinite pumpkin fields or that crisp fall chill – but the underlining eeriness this time has me. And, by the looks of Instagram many of you too! It seems we’re all embracing black cats, swarming bats, and the witching hour. 

There are more than a handful of so-called haunted towns in New England. With history as thick as colonial witches to revolutionary war heroes – you’ll walk away from any of these tours with a newfound respect for New England’s heritage whether you dare to believe the spooky tales or not. 

13 Ghost Tours In New England That’ll Give You A Fright!

Newport, Rhode Island – info here

This fun for all ages activity is the first ghost tour I ever went on! You can expect a historic lantern-led stroll of spooky tales in the haunted city by the sea.  

Mystic, Connecticut – info here

Take a seaside downtown tour or graveyard tour by moonlight. Your guide will answer all your haunting questions about the town’s history. This tour may touch on dark themes – aged 13 and up is recommended!

Plymouth, Massachusetts – info here

This colonial-themed tour promises a blend of history, ghost stories, and an open-air paranormal investigation. The scary meter is open to all ages!

With three walking tour options, you’re bound to catch a chill. During the adventure, talk of serial killers and other gruesome tales may be highlighted. Enter at your own risk!

Over the years, Bar Harbour has created some buzz with their ghost tours – ranking in the top ten best in the United States. While exploring the spooky seaport village you may capture orbs or apparitions, so bring your camera! The ghost tour is open to all ages.

 If you’re looking for curses and spells, Salem is the most bewitching!  In fact, this award-winning tour takes visitors to two locations used in the classic Halloween film – Hocus Pocus! The year-round tour highlights Salem’s old jail, the Witch Trial Memorial, and a cemetery where a Witch Trial Hysteria judge is buried.

From the chills of haunted theaters to the thrills of Portsmouth’s hidden history, you’ll walk to “Haunted Corner,” where four haunted buildings reside. Visitors will take in true ghost stories while browsing a forgotten 18th-century cemetery. Enter at your own risk – 13 spooky downtown stops are on this tour’s radar.

Get ready for a spooky ride because this tour takes you around one of the most historic cities on a trolley! Expect paranormal tales as you pass the Omni Parker House – known to house mysterious sites of the original owner’s ghost. Pass through Boston’s Ancient Burial Grounds and the most haunted place in the city: Boston Common,  This tour is recommended for 13 and up.

This lantern-lit tour runs for one more weekend this season, October 25th & 26th! The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society’s spooky, theatrical cemetery tour for ages 10 and up.

Ghosts, Witches, Pirates – Oh my! This comedic walking tour is a fun stroll through haunted history. Plus, it’s suitable for all ages!

We saved the creepiest for last! Bring your camera or voice recorder because paranormal activities have been recorded by past participants. Those brave enough will take a peek inside a 1690s jail and “The Barnstable House,” also known as “The House of 11 Ghosts.”
