I mean, there is no hiding that I’m not a morning person. I have never been and never will be and I’m very self-aware of that; however, over the past few months, I started to find myself waking up on the wrong side of the bed morning after morning. I often found myself waking up around 8:00 AM already with a sense of not having enough time in the day to accomplish what needs to be done. Now part of that has to do with how busy I’ve been with work and work-related travel, but a lot of that feeling also has to do with not having a morning routine since moving out of my apartment in Dallas and moving back in with my parents.

Moving back in with your parents after living on your own for a while was tough, mostly because of the clutter I’d collect while living on my own but also because it’s a completely new living environment which means a new morning routine is a must. With fall on the horizon, I hope to have a less hectic travel schedule and more time dedicated towards making a few small changes to impact my morning routine and overall attitude towards what needs to be accomplished.

Here are just a few tweaks, I’ve implemented this past week that have already made a difference:

+ Making a To-Do List Not A Schedule: I hear bloggers all the time raving about time blocking and scheduling, but no matter how I dice it, scheduling doesn’t work for me. Some tasks take me way longer than I anticipate and when I see myself falling hours behind a pre-planned schedule within the first two hours of the day, I often get in a ‘mood’ before noon has even struck. With that being said the night before I make a seven bullet point, to-do list…where I write down the seven things that MUST get down within the day. Whether that means I work a four hour day or a nine hour day; this system has allowed me not to see time as a burden.

+ Do Things That Fuel Your Soul: In the morning, I like to walk (sometimes drive) down to my local coffee shop and grab a French vanilla iced coffee. I know people will say that’s a waste of money but it’s something that brings me joy and motivates me to get up and get my day going; so it’s just what I’m going to continue to do. With that being said, make sure to schedule ‘you-time’ in the morning and not just at night. Whether that means exercising, watching TV or drinking coffee; give yourself time to get inspired and excited for the day ahead, instead of rushing into things.

+ Maybe Skip Breakfast: I often as a little kid skipped breakfast. It’s my least favorite meal, food-wise, and often I’m just not in the mood to eat right when I wake up. I often use to think this had to do with me not being a morning person but now I’ve later learned that it’s actually a way of eating called intramural fasting. Basically, you stop eating around 10 PM and don’t start eating until around 12 PM, which gives your gut time to reset and rest. Embracing the non-breakfast rule has really helped me to gain back valuable time in my day while helping to resolve some stomach issues I was happy to put at bay.

+ Don’t Check Your Phone: Recently I went to the eye doctor due to my eyes acting up, only to find out that I had an eye infection and seriously strained eyes from constant screen usage. I would say I spend about 80% of my day either on my computer or on my phone; which is gross. So I decided if there is any time to be screen free for me it has to be in the morning because I love working and watching Netflix in my bed at night. This week I’m working on not checking my phone until 10 AM. I’ll still be using my computer prior to that point but I’m hoping the lack of messages and instant feeling of having to reply will help me have a better attitude towards waking up. Also, Matt calls me about 50 times in the morning on his drive to work because he is, in fact, a morning person so I’m sure he’ll be bummed when he edits this post.

+ Actually Getting Ready: If you look good you feel good, and that’s coming from someone who works from home. Today I’m wearing workout gear and to be honest I just kind of feel gross. I always get way more done and feel better about my morning if I take the time to get ready and make myself feel good and look good. It sounds silly but it helps me!

All and all, by creating a mini morning routine I’ve been feeling happier, focused and experiencing a greater sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. With all that being said should I write a post, or more of a guide, to moving back in with my parents at 24? Let me know below.
