This past weekend actually felt like fall in New England, as temperatures dropped to a brisk forty degrees and buses on buses of leaf peepers filled into town. It makes me smile seeing tourists and other photographers bundled up and shooting images of New England’s natural beauty, in fact, it makes me giddy. So when Sunday rolled around Matt and I decided to venture to one of my favorite towns come fall, Deerfield Massachusetts and snap some pictures before the rainstorms roll in later this week.

Initially, I woke up planning to wear jeans but with the sun out and not a cloud in the sky, I threw on a dress, layered it with a jacket, and slipped on my favorite suede flats; in honor of enjoying the sun’s rays upon my pale legs before it became too cold to do so. Now by noon, we had arrived in Deerfield and with plenty of parking, we decided to leisurely stroll the historic streets and take in the orange hues of fall.

In the past, I’ve been known to style suede dresses all fall long; as brown hues are a go-to of mine and are often fun to embrace and play with this time of year. However this fall, I’ve started to see a few new shades and textures making their way into storefronts and consumers’ closets, that I’ve felt inspired to share. This year, in particular, I’ve seen one of my favorite materials, tweed, being embraced and making waves this autumn. Tweed, once a style reserved for proper holiday dresses, is now being fashioned into jackets, day-dresses and even a skirt and jacket suit. Overall I love that tweed has taken off this season, as it truly feels like a breath of fresh air amongst my heavily suede, denim and cotton autumn wardrobe.

Now if you ask me, fall is the ideal season to embrace texture because it brings depth and drama to any layered ensemble. Whether you’re layering tweed on tweed as I did on this day or tweed with another fabric, there is nothing more quintessential New England than a tweed jacket, so if you’re lost on where to start with this texture I recommend starting there. The jacket I’m wearing above is ideal for any New Englander because it packs in the warmth while being fully functional, with two front pockets and a fully lined interior. I mean, need I say more.

It’s kind of funny, how fashion is cyclical but dress codes keep changing. From winter whites to mixing textures; a lot of old-style taboos are off the table providing us with the creative space to dress with innovation, comfort and personal style like generations before us never could. With all that being said, I urge you to step up your layering game this fall and embrace the almost endless options of tweed. From one New Englander to another, I know you’ll fall in love.
