The day has finally arrived – it’s officially move-in day!

Well, for our stuff at least. Matt and I have a few more projects to complete before we can commit to next week’s occupancy inspection. Our original move-in goal was mid-February. But, here we are a few delays and one last minute project later. However, when all is said and done it has all been worth it!

To celebrate move-in day, our crew pulled some of your most requested home and relationship questions from Instagram for us to answer! 

What took you so long to move in? 

Valid question.

If I knew then what I know now, I could easily cut down a month or two of renovation time. When I took on the role of the general contractor, I had limited experience. I had to source my own crew, lumber, and fixtures. Some were easy to find, others weren’t. I learned a lot along the way, but it did take me longer to source than Matt and I had anticipated. 

I also delayed our move-in by two weeks for our upstairs bathroom renovation with Home Depot. The additional project opportunity was too good not to take on – even if I was bitting off a little too much to swallow. By the time we move in, our house flip will be finished and our home will be complete!

Well, except for our outside. But, that’s a story for another day.

How do you balance living together with two different schedules? 

Even though we have different social schedules, Matt and I get along better when we live together. I’m an evening person and really enjoy being left alone in the morning. I still wake up with Matt around 7:00 a.m, but I choose to start my day with high-focus desk work in the silence of my own office. No chit chat, no TV, just silence, coffee, and Christmas music. Whether it’s editing images or writing blog posts, I like to be left alone until 10:00 a.m. Once 10:00 a.m. hits, I start taking phone calls, leave the house for the day to curate content, or meet up with crew members in town to work on upcoming projects until around 7:00 p.m. 

Matt’s the opposite. When 3:00 p.m. hits he likes quiet time until about 8:00 p.m. In terms of energy flow, it’s hard having different schedules. But, being in the same space as each other – even if we aren’t socializing together – is still enjoyable. I think a big part of balancing living together is respecting each other’s time, energy flow, and being okay with being in the same space but doing your own thing. 

With so many options, How did you decide your home’s aesthetic? 

I believe in creating your own style – both within your home and closet! I also think it’s fun to try styling pieces together that you might not normally.

The key is being cohesive!

For me, creating a cohesive story for my home was really important. However, it wasn’t easy. I worked at staying on theme by avoiding quick purchases and sticking to rules with an iron fist.

I wanted our home’s style to be a mix of historical and coastal New England style. So in order to make sure the two very different looks blended, I worked to have every room complement the next. I did so by sticking to a color palette of five, bringing our color palette not only interior but also exterior, matching upstairs tile work with the downstairs, and maintaining oil rubbed bronze hardware and lighting.

How to order tile? 

Make sure to check out our post covering everything you need to know about picking out tile! If you are concerned with how many tiles you’ll need to order, you’ll need to know the square footage of your space. I ordered all of my tiles from TileBar. The website has a useful calculator that gives you the number of tiles needed per square foot of space. I learned to always order 10% – 20% more than required for any mishaps and customization needed to fit your space!

When is Matt putting a ring on it? 

This was our second most asked question. Honestly, I don’t blame any of you for being curious! It’s going to be a while before we announce an engagement. Taking on a fixer-upper was a major financial expense, so wedding and ring funds are currently not in our budget. Matt and I feel that investing in a house to call ours was the right first step for us.
