[outfit_details]This time of year I get lots of questions in my inbox asking about where to go apple picking in New England and what to wear to an orchard. Needless to say, apple picking is on the minds of my Instagram followers!
Over the weekend, Matt and I visited Scott’s Apple Orchards in Glastonbury, Connecticut to stock up on seasonal apples. With the start of October on our minds, we decided to turn our trip into an impromptu photoshoot!
If you’re heading to an orchard for a photoshoot, family-fun day, or with friends here are some tips on what to wear apple picking in New England.
When planning a photo shoot, I first take into consideration the natural hues of the scenery and map out a color story. For my apple orchard shoot, I knew I’d be working with tones of green and blue. So, to avoid color correction and white balance issues I styled Matt in myself in complementary fall shades.
We both wore tones of burgundy, black, orange and stone. The color combination makes us stand out against the backdrop. Plus, it let me play with the saturation and luminosity of the scene without altering our outfits.
Recently I was introduced to the British brand FatFace. They offer a large selection of jumpers, cardigans, and corduroy. Plus, timeless and affordable pieces for men too – like cashmere sweaters in fall hues! Matt’s pick is the color ginger under a quarter-zip sweater.
I decided to get my first dose of fall layers by styling a deep berry cardigan over a crew neck sweater. When I go apple picking for fun, I layer sweaters with cardigans or a vest like this one. To avoid a color conflict, I steered away from jeans and dressed Matt in chino pants. I wrapped up my look with this comfy skirt.
From a photography standpoint, I recommend styling a skirt with flats or rain boots because a peek of skin brightens the heavy layered look while still looking natural.
Apple picking is a yearly tradition for Matt and I. Needless to say, I was really happy to capture this moment!
