This past weekend Matt and I decided to take a spontaneous trip up North, to New Hampshire to celebrate some good news and catch up with some old friends. A weekend away has been long overdue and we decided to really make a trip of it before life gets even crazier; by enjoying some of our favorite spots along the way. Selfishly enough, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity for pictures so I threw on this plaid double-breasted coat dress from Donna Morgan, packed up my vintage suitcase and hit the road running.

For obvious reasons, fall is the ideal time to visit New Hampshire. From the crisp air to the illuminating leaves, the whole state seems to come alive in the quintessential fall hues. I often get asked when or where I’d recommend visiting New England come fall and to be honest, I always recommend the same three states…Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I’ll admit Connecticut is beautiful during fall but I still find myself journeying North come October to leaf peep in the previous states mentioned. So usually the next question I get is what towns or where specifically should I visit, and I can’t help but say any town with a wood covered bridge. 

If you are truly going to New England to get that picturesque autumnal shoot, you need to find a wood covered bridge. They quite literally are hidden gems scattered across New England and can be found in just about any shape, size, color or design. Now while they do make great backdrops they also usually mark the entrance to hiking trails or quiet country roads where you can truly get up close and personal with the leaves. With leaf peeping season finally, here, I figured I’d give you all a little insider help and share 5 Wooden Bridges Worth Visiting in New England, This Fall for any readers gearing up to visit. 

5 Wooden Bridges Worth Visiting in New England, This Fall

The Heart of Vermont: If you’re leaf peeping your way through Vermont you have to make a stop at Woodstock. There you’ll find Middle Covered Bridge which might be the most iconic wooden covered bridge in New England. You’ve probably seen beautiful pictures of this bridge nustled in-between colonial houses, whether you know it or not. It’s by far my FAVORITE covered bridge in New England and a must for anyone leaf peeping in Vermont. 

Lower New Hampshire: If you’re driving North from Massachusetts into New Hampshire pull over and stretch your legs with a walk over the Nissitissit Bridge. This is, in fact, the bridge Matt and I stopped at above! We discovered this bridge almost haphazardly while antiquing in the area, and couldn’t help but to pull into the dirt parking lot, grabbed our camera and snap some pictures. The leaves in this area had just started to change and were a vibrant yellow with hints of orange. 

Lower Vermont: If you’re driving North from Massachusetts into Vermont get your camera ready for a pitstop in Guilford Vermont for a view of the Green River bridge. Give yourself plenty of time to explore this wood covered bridge and the quintessential town of Green River. 

Conway, Massachusetts: If you’d like to see where it all started, drive over to Burkeville Covered Bridge in Conway, Massachusetts and snap a picture of the oldest surviving covered bridge in the United States. It’s worth the trip, trust me.

Upper New Hampshire: One bridge I have on my list that I’ve yet to see in person is the idyllic Stark Bridge in Stark, NH. This white wood covered bridge drapes over the Ammonoosuc River in a picturesque little town bustling with leaf peepers. Now while I don’t think I’ll make it up to this bridge come fall, I am hoping to visit during winter, to see it all decked out in holiday lights.
