A trip to Nantucket is a right of passage for anyone visiting New England in summer, but today I’m sharing a summer destination that is not only more affordable but truly more fun – I’m talking about a weekend on Lake Winnipesaukee!

A trip to Nantucket is a right of passage for anyone visiting New England in summer, but today I’m sharing a summer destination that is not only more affordable but truly more fun – I’m talking about a weekend on Lake Winnipesaukee!
Lake Winnipesaukee is located in New Hampshire’s lake region. It’s easy to get to from any New England state, which is one of the reasons Matt and I always like to journey up there.
Lake Winnipesaukee is special to Matt and his family. Matt grew up summering on the lake and his family owns a condo near Meredith, NH. Plus, Matt’s sister, Jessica, and her fiancé, CJ, live in New Hampshire. So we have more than enough reasons to visit!
When we visit, we’re lucky to have Jessica as a guide because she knows all about what the lakeside area has to offer. In February, Jessica even took us ice fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee (read all about it here).
Now I’m sharing a few of my favorite weekend activities on Lake Winnipesaukee with you for your own adventure!
New Hampshire one of the best places to go antiquing!
If you are a long-time reader here, then you already know I’m a huge fan of antiques. A lot of the stores I purchase from in Connecticut source their antiques from New Hampshire shows and little shops. When in New Hampshire, I always try to pop into Chic and Antique, Wolfeboro Antique Barn, and my favorite Waukewan Antiques – where I found transferware pieces for our new kitchen!
A look at some of my favorite antique shops can be seen here and here.
Personally, I’m not much of a hiker. But, if you are there are two trails you must check out on Lake Winnipesaukee. Both trails give you a workout with a gorgeous view.
A hike up popular Mount Major allows you to see all of Lake Winnipesaukee – making it the perfect spot for snapping pictures. The less-populated West Rattlesnake Mountain offers a beautiful view of Squam Lake.
A fun way to explore the lake is by boat!
Two years ago, Matt’s parents purchased a pontoon boat for the lake. Boating is a great time whether we’re cruising around, anchoring for a swim, or joining a sandbar party at Braun Bay.
For a unique boating activity, grab a drink on Lake Winnipesaukee’s very own floating barge called The Dive – which has great food, drinks, merchandise, and live music all in the middle of the lake!
Matt’s jumping in to talk about a topic he’s an expert on – where to eat on the lake!
From seafood to ice cream, Lake Winnipesaukee has a lot of options but here are a few favorites:
If you’re in the mood for classic Italian food, head to Giuseppe’s. This restaurant is hands down the best place to grab a slice of pizza on the lake. Not to mention it’s located in a great setting for friends and family to enjoy live music while chowing down on large Italian entrees.
For date night – Lakehouse Grill is the spot you want to be! This restaurant offers a lakeside view and an extensive wine and ale list.
If you are on the lake and looking for a place to dock and dine – Town Docks is your destination. This spot is a great place to grab a burger or lobster roll after a day out on the boat. Plus, the family-friendly restaurant offers sand, toys, and an on-location ice cream shop for kids.
If you’re looking to catch the game over some bar bites and brew – Patrick’s Pub & Eatery is the place for you! With multiple tv’s, beers on tap, and the best wings in town this pub has it all.
Matt and I always have the best time visiting Lake Winnepsaukie. With fall foliage on the horizon, we’re looking forward to our next trip up there soon!
