Even though Matt and I technically closed on our home in October 2018, this is the first holiday season in our New England fixer-upper. Or shall I say, it’s our first Christmas at home!

As joy and excitement fill the air, I’ve been a little preoccupied with a significant change in my life. This change has significantly altered my daily routine and left me feeling drained during the busiest time of year for both my business and personal life. With change and expansion comes an inner yearning for simpler things – like making new holiday traditions in our first home.

The idea of creating our own holiday traditions in our very first home had felt so far away. But this year, throughout our renovation, the anticipation of holiday decorating and making memories kept me motivated along the way. The end-goal brought me a sense of calm and stability during a time that felt anything but.

Back in 2017, Matt and I shared 7 Holiday Traditions To Start With Your Fella styled in Red Fleece. Ironically, today we’re back with just me this time – but still in Red Fleece = as we share our new holiday tradition from our home to yours.

When it comes to holiday traditions and creating them in the home – it all starts with the Christmas Tree!

Originally Matt and I toyed with the idea of getting an artificial tree from either Balsam Hill or The Home Depot but we knew we’d miss the experience picking our tree from a local farm stand like Bob’s Farm Market in Wethersfield. Connecticut. So, we decided to head to Bob’s and in the midst of our selection got stuck in the early arrival of quite the snowstorm.

Memorizes like this and poor Matt shivering from forgetting to wear gloves are things I’ll never forget about our first Christmas.

A second New England tradition we want to uphold in our new home is a mix of traditional and cheesy exterior decorations. Believe it or not, our home is scheduled for residing next week. So, I plan to head back to Bob’s Farm Market to deck out each window in the front of our home with wreaths like this home I spotted on my way home last week. I think the traditional look will be stunning on our New England cape. Plus, we can get away with keeping the look well into mid-January. It’s a tradition I hope to carry on with Matt each year as something we look forward to doing together!

Another new holiday tradition I plan to host is a Christmas Cookie Bake-Off! You see, Matt and I desperately need holiday cookie recipes to make our own. So, since we have a newly renovated kitchen to work in I’d love nothing more than to have my mom, his mom, and my sisters over for a bake-off with holiday music. I already know Matt’s Mom makes a mean molasses cookie which will be hard to beat!

Let us talk about this snowflake sweater from Red Fleece. It’s the holiday sweater I wear the most from my 2019 holiday sweater collection. There is something so effortless about black and white because you can wear it to work or play all winter long. It does run big, so I recommend sizing down.

I paired my snowflake sweater with these tartan cropped wide-legged pants. I find work trousers hard for my petite frame. But, these pants flatter and lengthen! In fact, I first purchased a similar black pair last year and couldn’t resist the tartan look they came out with for the holiday season.

Finally, I think this piece speaks for itself in all of its plaid wool twill glory! When I saw Red Fleece had a matching plaid twill long jacket to this skirt I styled all fall long, I knew it would be perfect for upcoming holiday fun. With gold buttons, black velvet, and a classic silhouette – every plaid lover needs this piece in their closet!

I hope this post inspired you to enjoy each little thing the holiday season has to offer. After all, it’s the little things like handpicking a Christmas Tree, hanging a window wreath, and the smell of freshly baked cookies that make this season so special.

Do you have any holiday traditions at your home you’d like to share? Matt and I are always looking for new traditions to celebrate this next phase so please share below!
