At the start of February, Matt and I realized we had just one weekend free until April. With work trips and our house renovation filling our leisure time – we decided to take our last free winter weekend and head to Lake Winnipesaukee. 

Honestly, I’m unfamiliar with New Hampshire. But, Matt’s parents have a condo in the Lake’s Region, and not to mention, his sister, Jessica, lives in New Hampshire full-time. Thus it seemed only right for us to visit and experience winter on the lake.

While in Laconia, NH, Jessica informed us she’d be ice fishing the next morning on Lake Winnipesaukee and invited Matt and I to tag along. We jumped at the opportunity so quickly that we didn’t discuss what to pack – leaving us lacking proper attire. That morning, we layered on pieces from our suitcase, including my favorite sherpa jacket last seen here.  Turns out, the weather was on our side as the temps rose to 37 degrees, leaving the air feeling balmy compared to the routine frigid chill. 

Initially, I thought our ice fishing adventure was going to leave us brutally cold and exhausted from physical demand. So you can imagine my excitement when I found it to be neither. Our fishing companions went the extra mile to make sure warmth and comfort were top priority! When Matt and I started to get chilly, we had the option to escape to a fully-insulated tent filled with portable heaters. Coffee, a grill set up for bacon and eggs, and plenty of fueled-up snowmobiles were also at our disposal. Which of course, made checking the ice traps a breeze and a ton of fun for Matt.

Turns out, the winter sport was a fabulous new experience! It actually made me wish we had blocked off more time to ice fish. But, Matt and I are looking forward to next year – since we’ll be attending the Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby. I hear the Derby displays wooden antique ice fishing huts that I’m just dying to take pictures with!
