Let’s talk about one of the most underrated summer flowers in New England – sunflowers!

This time of year, New Englanders can go a little hydrangea-happy, but with rising humidity and sporadic rain showers these last few weeks, our local sunflower fields are inching taller and shining brighter than any summer before.

This is the first summer I’ve been home for sunflower season since highschool! So, attending the annual opening of the sunflower fields at Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, CT was special. Especially since I got to partake in their annual Sunflowers for Wishes charity event!

On the day of the event, Tessa and I arrived at the fields in the blazing triple-digit weather. Since it was so hot, we weren’t sure how many people would venture out, but as soon as we turned onto the farm’s street, we found our answer. The parking lot was packed, the Make A Wish team was in full swing, and the line for ice cream seemed neverending. It was the biggest turnout I’ve ever seen on a farm.

The best part:  it was all for a great cause!

Every year Buttonwood Farm plants 14 acres of sunflowers and harvests around 300,000 blooms. The flowers are then put on display to purchase or simply enjoy. During the Sunflowers for Wishes charity event 100% of the proceeds are donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut, a non-profit organization dedicated to granting wishes to children with critical illnesses.

This year, the event runs through July 28th! For all the details including, location, donation options, and hours check out Buttonwood Farm’s official website here

I couldn’t help dressing to fit the theme, so I slipped on my go-to Peter Pan collared tweed dress. The best part about this dress it it’s a great piece to carry into fall. Plus, it’s currently ON SALE, When snagging this dress for your own sunflower field frolic, I recommend sizing up.
