When Matt and I moved into our New England fixer-upper back in 2018 we had a long list of projects to tackle. Over the past two years, we tackled the rooms we thought we’d spend the most time in – our kitchen and our master bedroom ensuite. We left rooms we thought we’d use less, like this multi-purpose room and our patio on the back burner. Not knowing that soon Matt and I would be spending a great deal of time at home.

As 2020 came to a close, and after Matt spending an entire year working from home on our kitchen counter; we decided it was about time to check off the upstairs multi-purpose room from our to-do list. So I was overjoyed when my friends at The Home Depot reached out to partner on this space with us. They helped bring the New England-inspired multi-purpose room I had envisioned to life. Everything shown in the photos below – from the gorgeous leather sofa to the picture frames on the wall, all came from homedepot.com/decor.

In fact, homedepot.com/decor offers a distinct online selection that has a large variety of quality products that fit your style. Your home’s interior design is so personal and in my opinion – a reflection of what you love. Rooted in nods to colonial New England, my interior style is less trendy making decor pieces sometimes hard to find. But with homedepot.com/decor large selection of products, I was able to find everything I needed. From rugs to antique-styled ceramic vases, that helped me put my New England touch on this room.

With all that in mind, let me introduce you to our newest renovated space – a New Englander’s multi-purpose room.

I always find before images of a space, so satisfying, so I included a few before images above. Unlike other spaces in our home, this upstairs room didn’t need much renovation work but rather just a new look. The only demolition we did was making the closet smaller, so we could make the living space larger. By removing the closet from the back wall – the window in the room now fell in the center of the main wall. This gave us the idea to design built-in bookshelves, a window nook, and two desks to fit the tiny space we had.

Scrolling through the great selection of office furniture homedepot.com/decor had to offer – from mid-century modern to farmhouse-style bookshelves – helped me to get design inspiration for this space. They also have a large selection of office chairs! Everything from statement pieces like these wooden black rattan chairs that fit in with our colonial theme to more trendy chairs like acrylic and midcentury.

If you’re a long-time reader, you might remember our colonial bathroom renovation we did with The Home Depot. Well, our multi-purpose room is next door to that bathroom! So we decided to include the same vertical nickel gap boards into this space, which creates a visual illusion of length and a larger space. Once the nickel gap boards were up it was time to add lighting to this room.

I believe lighting can really make a room! So I was overjoyed with the variety of lighting homedepot.com/decor had to offer. I’ve been DREAMING of having picture light scones for a long time and knew that style of lighting would look great over our desks. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure if The Home Depot would stock this item, since it’s more of an old fashion style. But sure enough, they had exactly what I was looking for and I think these picture lights make the entire room. Then I spotted this perfect flush mount heirloom light fixture it was in my cart in seconds, it matched the picture light scones perfectly, and got delivered to my home for free a couple of days later!

That’s the great part about purchasing home decor and furniture from homedepot.com/decor, is that all orders over $45 can ship to your home for free or get delivered to your local store for pickup. They offer free and flexible delivery and all returns by mail are free. Personally, I find in-store returns so convenient, for instance, Matt and I ordered the wrong type of doorknob for our closet door, so it was easy to bring the online purchase back into our local store to exchange it.

Okay, now we need to talk about this couch! I wanted to bring in natural tones of leather to give this room texture and color, since the room would be painted entirely white. Chesterfield sofas are iconically New England, and The Home Depot had so many to choose from. At first, I fell in love with this 3-Seater Chesterfield Sofa from The Home Depot’s Private Brand Collection – Home Decorators Collection, not to mention its matching chairs, which I will be purchasing for my living room! However, our multi-purpose room is limited in space so I was so grateful when I found this 2-Seater Tufted Loveseat that fits like a glove in the nook of this room.

I added this Home Decorators Collection wood coffee table with a lift lid which is perfect for storage in this tight space and kept with bringing natural tones and textures into the room. We then further defined the spaces by adding rugs! You all know I love rug shopping and if I’m not purchasing antique rugs – I have two go-to brands Safavieh & Unique Loom both of which are available at homedepot.com/decor.

Finally, to tie the whole room together it was time to add decor! I probably spent an entire weekend scrolling through the pages of homedepot.com/decor to find the perfect little decor pieces for our bookshelves, coffee table, and walls. I’m a big believer in small details bringing a room together when it comes to interior design. It’s things like the picture frames and vases that make a home feel homey. A few things I added to my cart right away were a mirror, great for making a small room look bigger, these gold picture frames which I used to frame my antique bird prints, and these ceramic vases that I filled with flowers. There are so many little decor pieces in this room that I’ve gone below and listed every product featured in this room below. From the globe to the chessboard, I had a lot of fun giving this room a little bit of my personality.
